OSEAN's Special Guest Presentation!
To welcome the autumn of 2026, OSEAN is pleased to invite you to a special seminar.
We are honored to host Ms. Caitie Frenkel, Membership Specialist and Consult at Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), as our seminar speaker.
This lecture goes beyond a standard presentation of research findings, offering a unique opportunity to hear directly from the author about the core of the research and the stories behind the paper. Ms. Frenkel has experience from multiple marine sectors including ecotourism, fisheries, research and NGOs. Her research covers fisher surveys and predictive modeling to understand why, and where commercial fishing gear becomes lost locally.
The seminar will focus on a topic of growing concern: understanding why and where commercial fishing gear is lost, and identifying practical solutions to prevent loss and guide recovery efforts. Rather than approaching the issue as an abstract environmental concern, the lecture draws on a global review and research from Canada’s Pacific coast, bringing together the experiences of commercial fishers and spatial modelling. It explores how fishing practices, seafloor conditions, and weather contribute to gear loss, and how mapping areas where lost gear is most likely to occur can help target retrieval efforts. Together, these insights can inform practical approaches to reducing lost fishing gear and protecting marine wildlife, habitats, and fishing livelihoods.
As this is a direct lecture by a leading international expert, the seminar will be conducted in English. We believe it will provide valuable insights for anyone interested in marine ecosystem conservation, and we warmly encourage your participation.
